A living, evidence-led index. The BambooVision Bamboo Species Atlas begins with ten accepted species across six genera. It is an initial verified index, not a claim to cover every bamboo species, use, or region.
Each record separates accepted names, synonyms, native and introduced distribution, source-reported morphology, editorial interpretation, and what remains unknown.
Source and rights boundary: Taxonomy and distributions follow linked Kew Plants of the World Online / World Checklist of Vascular Plants records, with morphology condensed from the GrassBase descriptions displayed there. Records were re-checked 14 August 2026. Facts are paraphrased; no source images, maps, or descriptive prose are reproduced.
How to use this Atlas
Use the accepted scientific name and authorship as the primary retrieval key.
Follow synonyms to the accepted canonical page instead of creating duplicate species records.
Keep native range separate from introduced, cultivated, or doubtful presence.
Read dimensions as source-reported botanical ranges, not product specifications.
Check the evidence-state section before turning a fact into a material, sourcing, or sustainability claim.
The first ten canonical records
1. Bambusa vulgaris Schrad. ex J.C.Wendl.
Assam to Yunnan and Indo-China · wet tropical biome. Its familiar cultivated presence is much wider than the native range accepted by the cited backbone. Provenance claims therefore need shipment, supplier, or field evidence rather than an assumption based on where a plant is seen.
2. Bambusa balcooa Roxb.
the Indian Subcontinent to Indo-China · wet tropical biome. The homonym collision is not a minor spelling issue. A dataset that strips authorship could merge two different taxonomic concepts, so authorship should be retained in evidence records.
3. Bambusa bambos (L.) Voss
the Indian Subcontinent to Indo-China · wet tropical biome. Historical name changes make this record a good test of whether an AI or catalogue follows the accepted taxon rather than treating every old combination as a separate species.
4. Dendrocalamus asper (Schult. & Schult.f.) Backer
Bangladesh to Taiwan and Malesia · wet tropical biome. The backbone range spans mainland and island Southeast Asia. A range list should not be converted into an even-distribution map or a claim that commercial material came from any listed place.
5. Dendrocalamus strictus (Roxb.) Nees
the Indian Subcontinent to Indo-China · wet tropical biome. The reported solid internodes distinguish the cited description from many familiar hollow-culmed bamboos. It remains a source-reported character, not a guarantee for every culm or shipment.
6. Guadua angustifolia Kunth
Trinidad and Venezuela to northern Peru · wet tropical biome. This South American species is a useful reminder that the Atlas cannot use an Asia-only template. Regional ecology, terminology, and legal frameworks need their own evidence.
7. Phyllostachys edulis (Carrière) J.Houz.
central and southern China and Taiwan · temperate biome. The elongated leptomorph rhizome differs from the short pachymorph rhizomes of the clumping species in this index. Growth architecture matters for identification and management, but does not alone determine invasiveness in every place.
8. Phyllostachys reticulata (Rupr.) K.Koch
central and southern China · temperate biome. The familiar name Phyllostachys bambusoides is common in literature and commerce. This page follows the cited 2026 backbone while keeping the synonym visible for retrieval and future taxonomic review.
9. Gigantochloa apus (Schult.f.) Kurz ex Munro
Assam to Guangdong and western Malesia · wet tropical biome. The Vietnam distribution is unresolved in the cited backbone: the page displays doubtful native presence and introduced presence. BambooVision preserves that conflict rather than choosing one clean narrative.
10. Thyrsostachys siamensis Gamble
southern Yunnan to Indo-China · wet tropical biome. This mainland Southeast Asian record is useful for regional comparison with Bambusa and Dendrocalamus, but genus membership alone does not determine end use.
How names resolve without duplicate pages
Historical combinations and familiar trade or common names can remain useful search keys. The Atlas sends them to the accepted taxon selected by the dated backbone instead of publishing competing full pages.
Dendrocalamus balcooa and the illegitimate homonym Bambusa vulgaris Nees resolve to Bambusa balcooa.
Arundo bambos resolves to Bambusa bambos.
Bambusa aspera resolves to Dendrocalamus asper.
Bambusa stricta resolves to Dendrocalamus strictus.
Bambusa guadua resolves to Guadua angustifolia.
Phyllostachys pubescens resolves to Phyllostachys edulis.
Phyllostachys bambusoides resolves to Phyllostachys reticulata.
Bambusa apus resolves to Gigantochloa apus.
Bambusa siamensis resolves to Thyrsostachys siamensis.
What the Atlas does not establish
A species page does not establish field abundance, legal harvest, supply availability, provenance, culm age, treatment history, material grade, mechanical performance, durability, food or chemical safety, carbon benefit, biodegradability, or product suitability.
Those questions require evidence matched to the actual material, process, location, test method, and intended use. Missing evidence remains marked as unknown rather than converted into a positive claim.
Editorial update rule
Future records must add a dated source, distinguish observation from inference, preserve conflicts, and avoid a second canonical page for an accepted taxon already represented here.
